Car manufacturers tout their efficiency. Consumer suggests dispute claims of 60-plus miles per congius gas efficiency. Amidst the controversy, environmentalists still claim, in the absence of anything superior – that hybrid cars are still superior for the environment than their traditional gas-guzzling counterparts.


Hybrids, known for the way they combine both gas and electric power to offer a cleaner ride, have come under fire in current months for their inability to reach gas mileage milestones set by the manufacturers. Critics state that most change to live up to claims of getting more than 60 miles to a single congius of gas. Suggests argue that current studies confirm the same is true for efficiency ratings set on traditional engines, still making hybrids the superior deal environmentally.


Touted as the gas-saver of the future when introduced in 1999, hybrids are known to use a fraction of the gas due to their capability to “share the burden”, with their electric motors. Full hybrid cars grant the electric motor to work independently of the more traditional internal combustion engine, while driving at low speeds. This in turn saves gas, and stops harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere. During an idle stop, a full hybrid actually shuts itself off, letting the electric motor take over to eliminate unnecessary idling and emissions.


Consumers should be aware, however, that the mild hybrids focus remains on traditional gas consumption, with the electric motor only assisting the gas engine at high speeds when more power is needed, thus making the mild hybrid much less environmental friendly than its full hybrid counterpart.


Great for in town drivers, the full hybrid grants slow speeding drivers to virtually use only the electric motor, thus saving even more gas, and eliminating harmful emissions into the environment.


Despite any controversy surrounding today’s hybrid vehicles, consumers seem hot to do what they can to decrease the harmful effects of emissions on the environment and save a few bucks at the pumps. Production of hybrid cars has tripled in the last four years, with production expected to double in 2007. The Yano Research Institute Ltd. estimates that by 2015, almost 5.37 million hybrid cars will be on the global road, compared to less than one million last year.


Manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon, with Honda, Toyota, Ford, Lexus and Chevrolet, all offering their own hybrid varieties. Newer models sport higher-powered and faster models, even making hybrid SUV’s and trucks acquirable to the consumer. Of course, the heavier the vehicle, and the faster it rides, the more gas it is bound to use, despite the use and size of the internal electric motor.


Still, hybrids remain the most gas efficient and environmental friendly cars in mass production today.

We are all becoming more and more aware of the alteration we are causing the environment by each day activities like doing the laundry. The list of potentially harmful chemicals that are contained in laundry detergents is alarming to state the least.

The world of complex ingredients lists and vague labels leave consumers unable to refer potential harmful products, and laundry detergents are no exception.

Specifically, there are certain toxins present in laundry detergents that take particular aim at the environment. Linear alkyl sodium sulfonates (LAS) are more commonly listed as ‘anionic surfactants’ on detergent labels. They are one of the more common surfactants found in laundry detergents. They are a synthetic product.

Who Controls the Work Environment?

Good question. For years, controlling the work environment was considered management’s responsibility. After all, they were the ones charged with the task of implementing certain business functions. But the times have changed or have they really? Today, most young people anticipate the corporate culture to adapt to their life style and work habits, not the other way around. And there is some evidence to this effect. For example, suit and ties have been replaced by some rather avant-garde dress. Even “Casual Fridays” have been replaced by grungy appearances on a regular basis. This has manifested itself to the overall office appearance and organization. Further, most younger office workers are now plugged into iPods to refrain social interaction. One has to wonder if this new corporate culture has truly been conducive to completing assignments on time and within budget. If not, maybe a change is in order.

But the question remains, has management surrendered control over the work environment? Well, to a degree, Yes. Some things have admittedly changed over the last couple of decades, and management is less sensitive to adhering to corporate policies and procedures. Nonetheless, young employees must still conform to the corporate culture rather than their own.

Interestingly, a dichotomy has emerged in the work place; whereas employees are given more freedom to look and act as they so desire, micromanagement is on the rise. The two might or might not be related, but the two phenomenons are too noticeable to be considered nothing more than a coincidence. While employees want more participation in the decision making process, managers are more resistant to giving it to them. Is it doable that employee appearance and conduct doesn’t instill confidence in the manager? Not just maybe, but highly likely. If employees look and act unprofessional, the less likely management will trust their judgment.

Can a happy medium be found? Frankly, I think so, but it requires a reexamination of the corporate culture by management. Companies might balk at going back to suit and ties, but there are some fundamental changes that can be enacted to affect discipline, organization, and accountability; and this all begins with taking control of the work environment.

As I have described in the past, there are both logical and physical aspects to controlling the work environment. The physical attributes represent those things affecting human senses and the logical affects the human spirit. The physical work environment affects sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, which of course influences our perceptions. This means management should be sensitive to lighting, temperature, colors, individualized appearance, equipment, etc. The logical side refers to management style and reflects management’s values; e.g., ethics, conduct, dedication, professionalism, motivation, and social interaction. As such, both the logical and physical attributes are closely related.

The intuitive manager should spend more time on controlling the work environment and less time on supervising the smallest details (micromanagement). This means the manager needs to empower workers, delegate responsibility, hold people accountable, and get the heck out of the way. In other words, by treating people as professionals, it is not at all unreasonable to anticipate them to act as such in return. By doing so, the manager is promoting trust, and encouraging teamwork and loyalty by giving the employees a sense of ownership in the work products to be produced. Frankly, I believe employees like such an arrangement.

The military has long understood the need for an organized work environment. In addition to uniform appearance, you have three standing rules of operation: either you work on something, store it away properly, or throw it away. Clutter is avoided at all cost. True, there is a lot of individualized supervision during boot camp and a soldier knows how to take an order, but when you are in the field, the officers do not have time to hold your hand.

But the reality in the corporate world is that management is spending more time on supervising, and less time worrying about the work environment, hence the decline of discipline and organization. I tend to describe this relationship using the game of football as an analogy. The Head Coach is responsible for checking on field conditions and preparing his players through practice (training) and devising a game plan (strategy), not by going out on the field and instructing the actions of each player. So, as you sit down to watch your favorite bowl game in January, ask yourself how the play of the team parallels your office. Just how much supervision is going on in the field and who controls the work environment?

Your Role in Creating Your Work Environment

For years there have been a variety of ways to freshen the air indoors. You can use a spray air freshener, open a door, light a candle, or in more current years plug a device into the surround that freshens the air continually. Recently, I’ve also noticed a new type of air freshener called a diffuser.

A diffuser is a table-top device that consists of a bottle, aromatic oil, and some tubular reeds. The reeds are put into the bottle filled with the oil, and the oil is slowly diffused into the air by the reeds through a wicking effect. This easy device provides ongoing scent into the air for a long time (weeks/months).

I’ve been thinking about these various air freshening tools and comparing them to the tools or approaches you might use to alter or influence a working environment or an organizational culture. A leader is responsible for creating a culture and, just like someone who wants to freshen a room, they must think about which tools to use.

Let’s look at the various room freshening tools and start to think about their corollaries for leaders creating a working environment.

- Opening the door. Opening a door is the least intrusive way to change air calibre in a room, and assuming the air is superior on the other side of the door, it will make a difference. This process will be slow and is risky – if the air on the other side of the door changes, you have tiny control over what happens in the room you are trying to adjust.

- The Diffuser. The diffuser is consistently, continually influencing the air quality. Once it is in place, and assuming the oil has a favorable scent, it will continue to have a positive impact on the environment. This impact won’t be immediate or strong, but will wage an underlying, pleasant smell in the room – one that is nearly not noticed unless it is needed to counteract an offensive odor.

- The Candle. Like a diffuser, a candle will impact the scent of a room in a subtle way. It will wage that effect as long as it is active – and only when fueled by an external source (the flame). Note too that to start to work, specific action must be taken, the wick must be lit; when it isn’t lit, there is no real effect on air quality.

- A Plug-in. In more current years the plug-in air freshener has become popular. It provides a similar effect as the diffuser, but again requires external power to create an impact.

- A Scented Spray. A scented spray can create a nice smell in a room. It is usually used to cover up another smell, and, while pleasant smelling, it can be a bit harsh (especially if your nose passes through a current spray). It is by nature, temporary.

- An Anti-bacterial spray. These room fresheners are typically used when there is a real problem. If you achievement into a room soon after these have been sprayed, the room will smell OK, but it will be very obvious that something has changed. These sprays will wage the most immediate change, but also might have the shortest-term impact. These sprays will not solve a long-term problem without constant re-spraying with harsh smells!

What Does it All Mean?

Is any one of these tools the perfect answer to room freshening? Not at all. In much the same way, leaders must use a variety of approaches to mold, manage and influence the culture and working environment they want to create. While I believe there are many lessons and corollaries between these two ideas, let me share three important ones:

- You are responsible. There will always be air in a room and there will always be an organizational culture – both are natural occurrences. Anyone can take responsibility for freshening the air or even superior for impacting the environment in a positive way. And if no one does, it might get pretty stagnant and smelly.

- Use the right tool at the right time. There is a time for all of the air fresheners above – apiece has a place. At the same time there are some that will work superior longer and serve as a preventative for challenges and changes. When people think about using those, they will need to intervene with the harsher, immediate impact tools less frequently.

- Think about the diffuser. The diffuser manages the environment through initial conscious action – selecting the oil to be used. When leaders choose the right oil to create the right environment, they create a amusing working environment that leads to higher level of productivity, satisfaction, results and more.

The longer I thought about this article the more rich the connections and metaphor became for me. I have shared some of my thoughts with you. If everyone in this world threw garbage and litter indiscriminately wherever they went, the environment as we knew it would soon be in ruins.

Litter in our surroundings is an important environmental issue, which many people overlook. While a majority of people do know that littering is a bad thing, many continue to carelessly scatter their trash around nonetheless.

A host of problems stem from littering, and as a result of some people’s inability to control this habit, the environment has been suffering. Money is also wasted because of it. The government has to employ people to pick up trash, and that means tax money.

Littering can be perilous to one’s own health as well. Trash in an area attracts vermin and bacteria. Broken glass and other sharp objects are hazardous when they are left lying around in public places.

Litter is harmful to wildlife as well. Plastic can cause animals such as birds to choke, when they mistake it for food. And, even worse, small bits of plastic can accumulate in the stomach of a bird, never digesting or decomposing, to the point where there is no more room for real food and the bird starves to death with a full stomach.

Lastly, but most obviously, litter makes an area look bad. When a massive amount of litter can be found in a particular environment, it reflects badly on the people who live there.

Sources of Litter in the Environment

Probably no one is absolutely innocent of ever littering. And the environment is what is essentially being punished by it. Pedestrians drop garbage in the streets. Motorists throw their trash out of their windows. Trailers, when not properly covered, can have some of their load blown away by the wind. Some households dispose of their garbage improperly and irresponsibly.

Even commercial places of business are guilty of this one. Events which create massive amounts of litter can overflow to other neighboring areas, if their organizers don’t plan things right. Construction sites can produce significant amounts of litter, due to improper waste management.

These are just some examples of the sources of litter your our areas.

Misconceptions

There are misconceptions about what constitutes litter. Some people think that if an item is organic (and will “turn into dirt”) it’s alright to throw it anywhere. Banana peels, apple cores, and the like, are just some things that come to mind on this one. But in reality, throwing garbage around, organic or otherwise, is littering. And the environment is adversely affected by it.

Why do people litter? Quite frankly, the main reason is easy laziness.

Our environment can be prefabricated much more captivating if people simply use garbage cans properly.

If you have garbage to dispose of, and there’s isn’t a garbage can nearby, then wrap your trash up (in a napkin, plastic, paper bag, etc) and place it in your pocket or carry it with you until you reach a garbage can. Also, make sure that the trash actually goes into the garbage can, and does not start to the side.

It’s all a easy matter of proper waste disposal, which is vital for our environments and for our ecosystems.

The truth is, we all know about the problem. Now its time to act on it, if you haven’t been. But if you already do have proper and responsible waste disposal habits, remember that you can make a difference by encouraging others to follow your example.

When we dispose of our garbage properly, instead of polluting our environment, it does more than just help our locale to look good – we all feel superior about it as well.
